My decision to purchase came down to price, performance, and a disgust for Creative's drivers - bloated in Windows, non-functional in Linux. Matter of fact i don't use digital at all with my surround sound receiver because i like the sound better for gaming.I now have a Xonar DX (D2X isn't worth it to me at the moment - there's going to be a new high end Xonar coming out soon, and I like having a front panel header for my headphones, which, for some reason, the D2X doesn't have.).

Oh i agree, if you look at my current mods rigs i use the same X-fi, the HT drivers were to much of a problem for me to keep for my setup, they just didn't play right with my rig(but i'm moose) it actually had even there product engineers confused so they refunded my money, but the sound was incredible.Īlucard666, if i might make a suggestion, check with bomberboysk and see about getting an opamp mod done, i had him swap them out on mine for better quality ones (got them as free samples even) and the difference was quite astounding when using analog. sure its got a crap load of marketing backing it and their drivers are less than stellar but for a gamer you just don't get the same options from any of the other offerings. Now, if you are not planning on using high-impedance headphones with your soundcard, you can easily get away with one of HT Omega's cheaper offerings that have the multi-channel analog build in.Ībsolutely, the DAC in the sound card will be much better than the DAC in the z5500, i know that from experience as well because i've had that sound card with the z5500'sįunny I've just always stuck to the X-fi's currently got a titanium fatl1ty pro. You need a card like the Claro in this case because it has the ability to re-encode the game's multi-channel sound into Dolby Digital or DTS and put it out over the optical output. Onboard optical does NOT put out surround sound from games, only DVD's. I find it also gave a better range throughout the frequencies. I have no idea what ones it is i got, i would have to dig up the info but it made the sounds more crisp and tighter than the ones creative used do. Now, if you're currently using optical on the onboard you'll definitely see a difference. The op-amp mod simply replaces the op-amps that creative used on the card with better quality ones.

The Halo by default only has a L/R headphone jack and L/R stereo output plus the optical. Yes, keep in mind you need the XT addon card with the Halo to get multi-channel analog ($50 extra). Do you think with this card the performance would improve beyond when the digital output can do? Ok well the z-5500's also have 3 jacks(green,black,yellow) for analog. with analog then the sound card will be doing the work. If your using digital your wasting your money on a sound card, using optical or coax out the receiving end does all the work, the sound card wouldn't be doing anything.
